The Lake Ontario Heritage Crew

Inspired by the iconic crest sweaters of ’90s Club Monaco, this design tells the story of Lake Ontario through symbols rooted in its landscape and history. At its centre, the sun rises over heraldic waves — a nod to the Indigenous origin of the name Ontario, traced to the Iroquoian word kanadario, meaning “sparkling water.”

The historic schooners honour the lake’s maritime past, while the leaping Atlantic salmon recalls a species once abundant in Lake Ontario and now the focus of long-running restoration efforts. Surrounding the crest are Ontario’s white trillium, common loon and eastern white pine — provincial symbols of the forests, waters and wildlife that define the region.

And yes, the name matters. In 2026, the U.S. government directed its federal agencies to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America.” This shirt is our quiet Canadian response: whatever somebody decides to put on a map, Lake Ontario is Lake Ontario.
